I first came to know about the opportunity through LinkedIn, after which I visited the official website and submitted my application.
First-Day Formalities, Infrastructure, and First Impression
On the first day, I reported to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Secretariat, where I was introduced to my supervising officer and briefed about the overall work structure. The initial formalities included submitting my identity proof, signing the attendance register, and attending a short orientation session on legislative procedures.
The infrastructure was formal and well-equipped, reflecting the seriousness, discipline, and structure typical of a government institution. My first impression was a mix of admiration and curiosity—I was genuinely excited to witness the legislative process up close and appreciated the professional yet welcoming atmosphere.
Main Tasks
During my internship, I was actively involved in legislative research and documentation. I had the valuable opportunity to observe the budget session proceedings, which offered deep insights into legislative debates and financial policymaking.
My contributions included preparing research briefs, compiling background material on key bills, and analyzing previous legislative discussions. I also assisted in drafting summaries and maintaining records of the proceedings.
Engaging with MLAs and committee members further enhanced my understanding of public policy and governance. This experience significantly sharpened my legal writing, research abilities, and deepened my grasp of the democratic process, especially within the context of Jammu and Kashmir’s unique political landscape.
Work Environment
The work environment at the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was formal, disciplined, and intellectually stimulating. A strong sense of professionalism and responsibility was evident among the staff and officials.
Despite the structured setting, interns were treated with respect and encouraged to observe and participate actively. Mentors were approachable and receptive to questions, which greatly enhanced the learning experience.
Overall, the environment fostered a deep understanding of legislative processes and nurtured a strong sense of civic responsibility and public service.
Good Things about the Internship
One of the most rewarding aspects of the internship was the opportunity to witness the inner workings of a legislative body firsthand. Observing the budget session and legislative debates significantly deepened my understanding of governance, policymaking, and parliamentary procedures.
Guidance from experienced professionals and interactions with elected representatives provided valuable insights that extended well beyond textbooks. I genuinely had a great experience during the internship and did not encounter any negative aspects. The environment was consistently professional, supportive, and conducive to learning. Overall, the experience was both educational and enriching from start to finish.

Engaging with fellow interns and staff fostered a strong sense of community, making the experience all the more enjoyable. One key lesson I took away was the importance of being observant and proactive—even the smallest tasks can be meaningful when approached with sincerity.
This experience not only strengthened my interest in public policy but also affirmed my commitment to contributing meaningfully to society through the fields of law and governance.
