Music Piano Transcribers
A music piano transcriber is someone who takes a recording of a musical piece and notates it for piano. This could be for a performance or simply as a learning tool to help a musician develop their musical identity. Whether they’re a singer/songwriter, jazz pianist, classical musician or any other genre, this process helps the transcriber focus their ears and really hear how the music fits together.
Music transcription is a complex and time-consuming process. Depending on the length of the musical piece, the complexity and the number of instruments involved, it can take hours just to determine the exact notes that are being played. This is why it’s important to work in small chunks, focusing on one bar or two bars at a time. Otherwise, it can become a mental and emotional drain to try and quasi-memorize the piece and figure out what is being played, especially in an unfamiliar style or tempo.
In addition to identifying and notating the notes, many transcribers also spend considerable time on harmonic analysis. This involves analyzing the simultaneous combination of sounds, separating instruments and recognizing the sound of each instrument (such as the exact vibrato or portamento used by a wind player). It’s not uncommon for this skill to be honed to a level that the transcriber can identify an entire chord structure just by listening to a piece of music.

How Much Do Music Piano Transcribers Make?
Some musicians have what is known as perfect pitch – the ability to instantly name any note they hear. However, it’s not a requirement for the job as most people in this industry use what is called relative pitch. This is similar to being able to tell how tall your friend is when you look at them.

Many musicians who transcribe music also spend substantial time on the technical side of things, such as figuring out how to play back a recording of their own improvisations or musical compositions. This is a great way to test out their skills and ensure they’re getting the right result.
Despite being an extremely time consuming and labor intensive process, many highly trained professional musicians make a living by working as music transcribers. It’s not uncommon for them to supplement their income with other freelance jobs, such as performing or composing music. Some even go on to become professional arrangers.
