Andriy Lunin is expected to leave Real Madrid this summer and join Chelsea, according to a report from Spanish radio station Onda Cero.
The Ukrainian has one year left on his current contract and was reportedly offered a renewal at Real Madrid but with the stipulation that he would continue to be an understudy to Thibaut Courtois. After a consistent run of elite performances last season both in the Champions League and La Liga, Lunin feels ready to make the step up as a #1 goalkeeper for a top European club. Madrid have opted for Courtois, thus the 25-year-old has decided to seek pastures new.
If Lunin does ultimately leave the club, Real Madrid sees Kepa as an ideal candidate to fill the void. Kepa, despite losing the starting position to Lunin last season, left a positive impression on the coaching staff and the dressing room with this exemplary attitude on and off the pitch. A swap deal could materialize between both clubs given Chelsea’s objective to remain within FFP and the new Premier League spending regulations.
