Two legendary figures from Real Madrid’s storied past, José Antonio Camacho and Jorge Valdano, have expressed firm belief in the club’s ability to overcome a 3-0 first-leg deficit against Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals. Speaking on Onda Cero’s Radioestadio Noche, the former Merengue icons drew inspiration from history—and from the mystique of the Santiago Bernabéu itself.
Camacho, who donned the white shirt from 1973 to 1989 and was one of the heroes of Madrid’s famous 6-1 comeback win over Anderlecht in 1984, made it clear: “The Santiago Bernabéu is a stadium that has something special about it. I’m sure this will also happen with Arsenal; the Bernabéu will weigh on them. English teams tend to be relegated away from home.
“Arsenal will respect Madrid a lot, and that could be their problem. Fortunately, there have been many magical nights for Real Madrid, with comebacks. If there’s a team with this mentality and with fans who approach the pitch in a different way, it’s Real Madrid. The same players want to go all out at certain times, and at other times, they hide.”
Valdano, who played for Madrid between 1984 and 1987 and later coached the club, recalled that very spirit from the Anderlecht game. “I didn’t believe in the comeback,” he admitted. “But Camacho ignored the duel from the first minute and started challenging us.
“I remember that on the morning of the match, he would wake me up and start asking me how I was going to play that day, how I was going to head the ball that night. We were a group of kids conjured up for madness.
“Emotion has a very good memory, and those matches are unforgettable. The atmosphere was better than it is today because there were so many people standing, and 120,000 people gathered there to cheer. There was also an extraordinary level of confidence when it came to playing.”
Turning his focus to Wednesday’s game, Valdano said: “Rationality is completely set aside here. This generation knows the path and the climate that needs to be created.
“There’s a moment of chaos that produces euphoria in the Real Madrid players and fear in the opponents, which is starting to create the conditions for incredible things to happen.”
