Thibaut Courtois—6.5: Saw a lot of the ball at his feet but distribution was a mixed bag. Long balls were often rushed and without a target (4/18 completed). Did make a crucial save on a Phil Foden shot from outside the box.
Fede Valverde—8.5: What a player — Ancelotti’s words ring true, “the most complete player in the world”. Played the right back position as if he had been the best in that spot for several years.
Tchouameni—7: Has improved his positioning in the center back spot and provided adequate cover where necessary.
Raul Asencio—8: Game after game the young center back continues to impress. Battled hard with Haaland, had a crucial slide tackle on KdB inside the box, several last minute challenges to deny a shot, and was seen trying to cheer on his teammates during difficult periods in the game.
Ferland Mendy—6: Slow start to the match but improved as the game went on. Struggled to deny Foden cutting inside onto his left foot.
Dani Ceballos—7: A huge start for the midfielder, who applied himself well and was crucial in keeping fluidity to Madrid’s game. Produced an assist on the Kylian Mbappe equalizer for a 1-1 scoreline. Was visibly upset after conceding a penalty in the 80th minute but his teammates made amends.
Eduardo Camavinga—6: Still finding match rhythm after being out for four weeks. Put his teammates in difficult positions with under hit passes.
Jude Bellingham—7.5: Missed two big chances, one a header from inside the box and the other a 1v1 with Ederson that saw the Brazilian keeper make the save. Did eventually get his goal with 93rd minute winner latching onto Vinicius’ lofted pass (or mishit shot). Bellingham had several important dribbling sequences in the match to break City’s press and release the forwards.
Rodrygo—6: Deliveries from set pieces were underwhelming. Had the difficult task of trying to beat Gvardiol off the dribble and then tracking the Croatian defensively.
Vinicius Junior—9: Man of the match — Vini showed off his world class quality on the biggest stage. Produced two assists and five key passes, including a precision outside of the boot pass to Mbappe in the first half. Hit the crossbar with a curled shot after cutting inside onto his right foot. Toyed with young Rico Lewis in the second half and made the City fans rue their banner.
Kylian Mbappe—6: Scored a fortunate goal with the ball coming off his shin. The movement on the goal was intelligent and technique was there, but the timing of the connection was off. Nonetheless Kylian got his goal but had missed two to three big opportunities earlier in the match.
Substitutions:
Luka Modric—6: Replaced Ceballos in the 81st minute immediately after the penalty conceded. Had several quick one-touch passes to up the tempo of the match.
Brahim Diaz—8: Created and scored the second Madrid goal, an instant impact after coming on in the 84th minute.
Fran Garcia—N/A: 92nd minute substitute for Mbappe, but was involved in the game-winning goal helping to press City and force the mistake.
