Switchin Sides

I’m completely open to a dialogue which allows people to change their minds. We are simply human and we react based off the information that is present to us, and I keep trying to quell my unbridled anger by saying “life is full of perspectives.” I try to temper myself by saying that whether you want Carlo to remain as our manager or not, or think Mbappe is a wasteful spending, it’s just simply perspective. Life is a collection of perspectives.

Nevertheless, I can’t seem to temper this rage when I at times see perspectives being deployed for only temporary gain. I’m short on time today, so I likely won’t be as eloquent as I would prefer but maybe the term I’m searching for is disingenuous perspectives. I feel like that’s a misnomer…but let’s carry on.

At times, I feel that changes of perspectives are simply a temporary result to now lambaste current unpopular players or views. And here are my litany of examples that I happen to see here:

Example #1 — Rodrygo. For the better part of last season, Rodrygo was nicknamed “Purple Patch Rodrygo,” the internet called him Bangladeshi and not Joga Bonito Brazilian (luckily we haven’t entertained that type of nonsense here so kudos MM), and worthy of being sold. He talked far too much for stating what everyone and their grandmother knew — “City was a better team than Madrid.” He was too bold for complaining about his sacrifices. He wasn’t even better than Brahim Diaz.

But now today, many hope Rodrygo or Ghostrygo returns to play LW. He has become unplayable. He is lauded as the forward who enables our defensive actions to click. He is everything that current Kylian Mbappe is not. Rodrygo has done nothing but perspectives have suddenly changed. Like let’s be serious…ya’ll don’t actually love Rodrygo. He’s just convenient right now.

Example #2 — Joselu. In my mind this is actually the most appalling example because if not for absolutely crucial Bayern goals, the majority of Real Madrid fans would have forgotten Joselu still exists. Joselu was persecuted all of last year for not being clinical enough nor fast enough nor very good on his feet. At the time of his purchase, MM clamored for Harry Kane or legitimately anyone else to supplement him. We needed a Benzema-type forward. We needed a less poacher 9. And in some cases we needed Lacazette or Belotti (yikes).

Today, in almost every DT and a few MM podcasts, people have now latched onto this idea that Real Madrid is missing a mythical traditional 9. And I ask why? We didn’t want one last season. We’ve pretty much never wanted one in our recent history. I’m a huge fan of Joselu but I’m not entirely sure that he’s actually missed. He was barely used to begin with. And when he was used, no one seemed to want him around.

Example #3 — Unnecessary signings. For this I’m just going to quickly list a few recent signings who were deemed unnecessary by the majority of MM and either immediately proved their worth or eventually showcased their utility: Thibaut Courtois (the Giraffe who wasn’t better than Navas), David Alaba (the CB who wasn’t Ramos and really was a glorified LB), Jude Bellingham (an overpriced Brit when we needed Josko Gvardiol to play CB / LB), Ferland Mendy (only if you guys remembered the Marcelo wars of 2019 — we lost mods over that…RIP mrs. madridsta), Fran Garcia (actually this one may be too soon, so lets scrap it) , Camavinga (we missed out on Mbappe and signed a random French midfielder who won’t start over KCM and always gets a yellow), etc. etc. So let’s give them some time…

Anyway, maybe the lesson here is that we shouldn’t take sides or extreme positions in a rather gray world. Idk. I’m rambling at this point. Queue the gif:

Other Sides

Injuries. There hasn’t been any official statements, but Jude / Mbappe / Brahim are being evaluated for potential injuries or overloads. At this point, just fire the training staff and bring in consultants. I know it’s easy to blame Pintus but a bit of me is also questioning what we do in training to begin with and who at Sanitas is evaluating these players injuries. There is a collective problem at Real Madrid this season. Some of it is rotating and not trusting youth, some of it is absolutely just pure conditioning, and some of it is the messy football schedule. But this injury crisis is bad and progressively getting worse.

Heal up Cama. I already miss you.

Pressure

Carlo. There’s a saying that pressure bursts pipes or creates diamonds…and boy does it seem like Carlo is under pressure. If I was a gambling man, I’d say that he is more likely to get fired id season than finish the season (and I’m not entirely sure thats the right thing to do or fair). Most Madrid managers (not named Zidane) would’ve been fired by now.

Anyway, and I’ll develop this sentiment maybe in the next DT. I kind of understand why Carlo does what he does and I don’t entirely blame him. Carlo has a team which isn’t performing with a whole lot of talent and a whole lot of expectations. Remember “this is the greed they wrote about in the Bible.” He is likely hearing from Florentino on a bi-weekly basis, this loss and you’ll lose your job for Santiago Solari (which is a huge knock to one’s career). Also Carlo isn’t exactly getting a new big job any time soon. He’s closer to the end than the beginning.

So I guess in someway I dont fully blame him for always leaning on the players who have gotten him this far. I don’t really blame him for conducting a smattering of loose tactics as he tries to figure what sticks. I’m not sure that I blame him for rushing players out of injury (trust me our players are being rushed…). His job is clearly on the line.

Well actually maybe the term isn’t blame. Maybe it’s I do blame him for these things but I empathize with his situation. Idk. Life is full of perspectives.

Zubi Zubi Zuu

We continue to monitor him. I’m not sure if he even wants to leave Sociedad but the monitoring must continue. Someone let me know if he’s THAT good and if he’s needed over Tchouameni / Camavinga.

I’m withholding judging the quality of our current players (besides Mendy) until I see new leadership. I just think they all could use a new voice and its innapropriate for me to make sound judgements until that voice arrives.
