A Year in a Life of a Fresher at RMLNLU

This Law School Experience has been shared by Kanak Goel, Campus Leader at Lawctopus.

RML from the viewpoint of a Fresher, covering each month

As I stepped through the gates of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow, the excitement was palpable. With big dreams in my eyes, I was eager to embark on this new journey. Here’s how my first year at RMLNLU unfolded—a blend of challenges, discoveries, and unforgettable moments.

(I had my 1st semester online due to Covid but I hope I don’t fail to capture the essence of it for students who are yet to join the college in physical mode).

July

The remarkable journey of your professional degree starts in early July. The entire month is then consumed by the college orientations about hostels, the technologically-advanced Madhu Limaye Library and the introduction to the curriculum of course.

As the college offers 7 student-run committees (and many societies and NGO), the last week of July is reserved for the orientations of the same. This has great ice-breaking sessions, repo building between juniors and seniors from all the batches.

We find our interest through these committee orientations, what kind of people we like, the work they do and everything that we’ll need to know to find about the college and more about our own selves.

August

Committee inductions- The MOST overwhelming week of the beginning of the college- INTERVIEWS! This is the most intimidating time as a fresher. You know things about committees that you’ve heard during their orientations, you have so much on your mind like you need to put your best foot forward, leave an impression and what not.

Seems like the end of your life. But once it’s over, you realize that it was the most thrilling week. You expose yourself to seniors, their on-spot questions, your reflexes- you can feel ‘the courtroom tension’ building. At the end of this time, you find your niche, your people, your committee who becomes your closest set of people for the next 5 years.

Then chronologically, all the dedicated committees of the college organizes events especially for the Freshers to give them a taste of all events which are later organized at inter and intra levels. We have “Litigium”- debating competition for the First year giving them a first-hand experience of debating.

Bharatotsav- The most awaited event during this time remains Bharatotsav. It’s a three day event filled with dance competitions where mostly 1st year students participate in a great number, singing competition and tons of fun.

During August only, you get a moot proposition to work on for the next 20 days.

September

By the time September approaches- Navitas also casts its shadows. Navitas- mooting event for the first years. Time to finally wear those ironed suits, all black and white! During the orientation of the Moot Court Committee, they show you how to moot through their demo moot. They conduct various workshops for the first years.

Now is the time to show those skills off! As this is the time that most of the aspiring law students think of while giving their entrances- to argue in a courtroom.

As the end approaches, you all have to buckle up in academics as this is the time for “Topic-submission” for projects of all the subjects you have taken.

October

October is jam-packed month with Athena i.e. Paper Presentation organized for freshers by the Seminar Committee is there. Then is the best time of this odd-semester “OHR” , the intra college cultural festival for 3 days. Again, theme-parties, cultural competitions and lots of gelling with batchmates and seniors.

By the end of the month, comes the first thing which shows you some academic-pressure: the Projects. So a fun month ends with you begging your mentors and seniors for their guidance for these projects and you calling all the friends who had attended classes and listened to the teacher while you did NOT.

It doesn’t end here, you are left with the EXAM scare as you are just about to get the date sheet.

November

The month that all of us dread till our 5th year- where finally (which is rare) the fun is sucked out of the campus. Everyone, even the backbenchers, are seen being regular to the libraries. You start collecting notes from anywhere and everywhere. Good luck!

December

Internship break or vacation.

By 25th you have another moot proposition in your hand for the next 25-28 days.

January

You come back to campus. You realized that you had missed your college friends who you just met 4 months ago. You change groups, you find your people, it’s the constant.

The second moot that is organized for the Freshers is the highlight of the month. This one, Concours, has more value as through these ranks, you are allotted the National Moots. You also get to make a team of your choice, so YAY!

February

A simulation of Zero Day with commendable efforts is organized by the Internship & Placement Committee with various other events like Workshops, interactive sessions etc and what not. An all professional event gives you a great insight of the real world out there.

YOU CAN NEVER GET ENOUGH OF FEBRUARY, because we have our Annual Inter-Colleges Fest- RIWAAYAT & AWAAHAN. 3 days- 12+ events, 20+ OOTDs and uncountable memories. This is the peak fun session at RML with celebs in music, stand up, DJ grace the stage.

The competitive-spirit that the teams from all colleges show in the day-time turns to all of them dancing together to the famous Qawali Night of RML. These days, the “Jeene ke hain 4 din” coded.

February has to be any Lohian’s favorite month, without a doubt.

March

March seems dull after the core party month of February but Panenka, Balls of Fury and other intra sports events keep us going. Auctions are organized where even the first years can buy teams and be the owners.

By the end, you are again, yet to submit your projects because yes the exams are approaching.

April

April is again the exact copy of November with the difference is that the even semester has shown you the peak fun side of RML. You also get emotional because there will be 2 months break and you have already gotten close to these people.

I will not shy away from accepting that in order to have fun times, after Cultural and Sports fest, I recall my exams time only. Because the bonds that you create at those times, staying up late till 4 and asking your neighbors to wake you up early, dividing syllabus etc, that is very real.

May – June

*internship break*

July

Congrats, you are a senior!
