How to remove grease from oven glass doors in 30 minutes with 1 natural cleaning item

Oven glass is difficult to clean as not only does it get spatted with grease or food but it can become burnt into the surface, and will not come off no matter how much you scrub at it.

The longer you put off cleaning oven glass the harder it will be, but it needs to be done as the buildup can harbour bacteria which will make an oven much less hygienic.

Erin, a natural cleaning expert and founder of Lemons Lavender and Laundry has shared that cleaning an oven does not have to be a stressful chore as all you need is one ingredient you likely already have in your kitchen.

She said: “I have to admit, I never really paid attention to the inside of my oven door. I simply ignored the fact that baked-on food had been accumulating for years.

“While there are lots of tips and tricks on how to clean a glass over door, I love this method because it uses one simple, natural ingredient: baking soda.”

Baking soda is alkaline, and its high pH level allows it to break down acidic substances such as grease or burnt food, and it is also mildly abrasive which makes it easy to wipe away grime without scratching the glass.

Erin said: “While using baking soda takes a little more time and effort than using an oven cleaner, it certainly does the job; and without harmful chemicals.”

How to clean a glass door with baking soda

To clean an oven door all you need is baking soda, a sponge plus a non-scratch scour pad to ensure you keep your oven glass intact.

Then start by pouring a large amount of baking soda all over the glass and then wet the scour pad and use it to move the baking soda around until you have a thick paste.

Erin said “The baking soda tends to stay in clumps, so do your best to evenly smear it around the glass door.

“The goal is to cover the entire glass oven door with the baking soda paste. If you find you do not have enough paste, simply add more baking soda and water.

“If the paste is thick and clumpy, add more water; if it’s thin and runny, add more baking soda.”

Once the baking soda paste is completely covering the glass oven door, leave it to sit for around 30 to 60 minutes. For extremely dirty oven doors it is best to leave the paste to sit overnight for the best results.

When the time is up, wet the scourer again and begin to scrub in a small section and the grime should easily wipe away.

After lifting up all the dirty grease and burn marks use a wet sponge to clean up any remaining baking soda paste.

Erin said her oven glass looked “like a mirror” after trying out the baking soda and was delighted by the results after showing pictures of her sparkling oven.

She said: “I’d say that was one successful cleaning tip!”
