Drivers urged to follow lesser-known rule on country roads or risk fine

The vehicle retailer Swansway Motor Group has warned drivers to take care when driving around horses, or else they risk an expensive fine.

With the summer months approaching and many motorists planning staycations out in the countryside, more drivers are set to encounter other road users riding horses.

A spokesperson for Swansway Motor Group noted that the best way to negotiate a horse on the road is to slow down and give them plenty of room.

They advised: “Drivers should approach horses slowly and cautiously, giving them lots of room, per the Highway Code, this will help to keep the horse, the rider and drivers safe.

“Horses can be unpredictable, and sudden movements or noises can startle them, potentially leading to dangerous situations for the rider and the driver.”

According to the Highway Code, drivers who are about to overtake a horse should slow down to 10mph and give them two metres of space.

At no stage should motorists try to make the horse speed up by revving the engine or sounding the horn, which may cause it to act unexpectedly.

Drivers who startle the horse or put it in danger could face fines of up to £200 and six penalty points on their licence.

Swansway Motor Group’s spokesperson also warned that many insurance companies will not pay out for damage caused by horses if they were startled by the driver.

They added: “Horses are vulnerable road users, and the Highway Code requires drivers to slow down to 10mph when passing horses, maintaining at least two metres of space.

“This is crucial to prevent accidents caused by spooked horses, which can react unpredictably to perceived threats. Most comprehensive car insurance policies will cover the cost of a horse damaging a vehicle, provided it wasn’t the driver’s fault.”
