About the Event

Trial advocacy is a specialized field of knowledge focused on improving the skills and effectiveness of attorneys and other individuals involved in the trial process. One important educational method within trial advocacy is the use of simulated trials, which is a clinical legal education approach. Simulated trials, particularly at the college level, serve as a valuable tool for students to learn and internalize the intricacies of the law through practical application.

At its core, a simulated trial is essentially a controlled imitation of a real court proceeding. Its primary objective is to provide students with hands-on experience in applying legal principles and procedures within a courtroom context. While real criminal proceedings in court can often drag on for years before reaching a final verdict, simulated trials offer a condensed and accelerated learning environment.

In simulated trials, students are tasked with replicating the entire legal process within a relatively short period of time. This includes conducting investigations, preparing legal arguments, presenting evidence, examining witnesses, and delivering compelling opening and closing statements. These exercises are designed to mimic the challenges and dynamics that attorneys face in actual criminal court cases.

Simulated trials serve as an essential training tool in law schools and are also commonly used in continuing legal education programs for practicing litigators.
