The private registration plate purchasing site National Numbers has shared a range of tips that can help drivers be prepared for travelling in wet weather.
Despite summer being just around the corner, the unpredictable UK weather means that there is always the chance that motorists will be caught out in the rain, which could lead to breakdowns and accidents.
David Edwards, Head of Operations at National Numbers, noted that an understanding of basic vehicle maintenance can help drivers avoid issues.
“Many drivers focus on the obvious checks, but several less apparent aspects of vehicle care are equally important. We want car owners to know the basics of car maintenance for wet conditions, ensuring their vehicles remain reliable and efficient throughout the rainy season.
“By addressing these often-neglected areas, drivers can avoid breakdowns, improve performance, and extend their vehicle’s lifespan.”
First, National Numbers suggested that motorists should regularly check the windscreen wiper blades on their vehicles.
Whilst it may seem trivial, spending 30 seconds looking at the condition of the wipers can help prevent streaks that make it much harder to get a clear view of the road.
Similarly, drivers should replace the current wiper blades if they start to make a loud scraping noise on the windscreen.
Drivers should also regularly check the tyre pressures of their vehicle, topping them up to the levels recommended by the manufacturer where necessary.
Typically printed on a sticker in the driver’s door well and in the owner’s manual, making sure the tyres have the right level of pressure can help aid handling quality and reduce braking distances.
Keeping the tyres topped up can also help to increase fuel economy, with various studies showing an improvement of up to 10 percent.
Finally, National Numbers recommended drivers put an emergency kit in their car that has everything passengers need in the event of a breakdown.
This includes items that can help to make a wait for recovery less arduous, such as water, non-perishable snacks and warm clothing.
However, in order to stay safe in heavy rain or at night, a torch and warning triangle that can be placed behind the vehicle to alert other drivers should also be added.
